Clinton makes history
ENGLISH
Hillary Clinton made history Tuesday as she secured the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the first woman ever to lead a major party ticket in the quest for the White House.
ENGLISH The victory came eight years to the day since she conceded the nomination to then Senator Barack Obama in 2008.
Senator Bernie Sanders had hoped to do well enough in the six states with delegates up for grabs this week to continue his challenge through to the Democratic convention in Philadelphia next month, but with the majority of those states going to Clinton it became clear this was not to be.
President Obama called both Clinton and Sanders to congratulate them on well run campaigns that invigorated thousands of new voters and to urge them to find a way to unify the Democratic Party in the months ahead of the November general election when Clinton will face presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Trump faced troubles from within the GOP this week as one Republican senator withdrew his endorsement of the billionaire over controversial comments Trump made asserting a judge in a civil case was biased against him because the judge’s parents were Mexican immigrants. House Speaker Paul Ryan joined other prominent Republicans in condemning the statements of their party’s nominee. (La Semana)
