Hispanic women are not afraid of business

-

During the last five years Hispanic women have grown considerably in the local business industry. Carmen Eagles, an insurance broker agent with Farmers Insurance, is one of the examples of this trend, and in an exclusive interview with La Semana, shared her experiences in the Tulsa job market.

Carmen started working as an insurance broker back in her native Lima, Perú, 20 years ago, but when she arrived in the US she became a full-time housewife, with no time for extra work. 12 years later, when the kids became older and she became wiser, Eagles decided to get back on track and put her knowledge to good use.

Eagles explained that the main obstacle Hispanic women face whenever they decide to work in the US is culture and language.

“We are so used to living in societies where women belong to the house and the kids that we tend to forget that we can do more than that. Women are multitaskers; we can handle a lot of situations at the same time without neglecting any.”

As a mother and wife Eagles felt that going back to work was taking precious time away from her loved ones, but said that good communication and order allowed her to balance her private and personal life. Always being in touch with her daughter and husband is what helped her to pursue her career goals and return to the insurance world. The key steps, according to Eagles, are to set a goal, prepare for it, and always have an open mind.

Carmen is positive about the role of women in the business industry, and very much aware of the increase of female power in key positions in politics and economics, but above all believes that it is largely a question of will.

“A lot of people are afraid of being rejected in this country, afraid of not pursuing their goals, and that is why they end up stuck in meaningless jobs that give them nothing. Well let me tell you one thing, this country is full of opportunities, but it helps you grow only if you do not surrender.”

Carmen concluded the interview encouraging Tulsans to visit Farmers insurance if they are in need of financial advice, new investments, or insurance in general. (La Semana)
