Destined for WTA records: Destanee Aiava's 1st main draw win

La australiana Destanee Aiava se convirtió en la primera tenista nacida en la década de 2000 en ganar un partido en un torneo de élite del circuito femenino WTA tras superar por 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 a Bethanie Mattek-Sands, de 31 años. El juego se disputó en dos días. La joven, que tiene una invitación para disputar el Abierto de Australia, se enfrentará antes a Svetlana Kuznetsova -- con dos triunfos en majors -- en segunda ronda del torneo preparatorio para el primer Grand Slam de la temporada.

La tercera cabeza de serie de Brisbane, Pliskova, que derrotó a Serena Williams en semifinales del Abierto de Estados Unidos, se impuso a la estadounidense Asia Muhammad por 6-1, 6-4 para pasar a cuartos de final. Rompió el servicio de su rival en cinco ocasiones y no tuvo apenas problemas para superar la segunda ronda.

Svitolina, sexta preclasificada y la única mujer que ganó a Williams y a Angelique Kerber en 2016, ganó 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 a Shelby Rogers. Además, Alize Cornet eliminó a Christina McHale por 6-2, 6-1. The 16-year-old Destanee Aiava advanced through qualifying before becoming the first player born in the 2000s to win a main draw match at an elite WTA event, beating veteran American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday in a first-round match at the Brisbane International.

She's set for another memorable mark, too, after being granted a wildcard entry to the Australian Open starting Jan. 16 in her hometown of Melbourne. Aiava is set to become the first player born in the 2000s to play a main draw match at a Grand Slam event.

Her first win in the main draw didn't come easily, spanning two days and giving her plenty of time to think about it.

Heavy rain forced a postponement on Monday night when she led 3-0, 40-15 in the third set.

Aiava struggled with her serve briefly on resumption Tuesday, but overcame a couple of double-faults and held on to close out with an ace on her first match point.

"Struggled a bit at the end, but I got through it," Aiava said.
