Superintendent Gist’s message to the community
Tulsa, OK -- The recent changes and dreadful news that have been circulating since the new president took office has created concern among the local Hispanics, who now dread sending their kids to school, afraid of possible deportations.

Tulsa Public Schools has received calls from many worried parents who do not know if their children will be able to attend classes.
Superintendent Deborah A. Gist has decided to send the following message to the Hispanic community to calm the waters and clarify the Tulsa government’s stand on education:
“Every family has a place in TPS. We are an inclusive and positive community full of people eager to learn, people that value and cherish diversity in all of its forms: race, religion, ethnicity, origins, gender.
“We know some members of our community have doubts, uncertainties and fears about what may happen if the federal policies are taken into action. Even though we may have changes at the federal level, our commitment to a safe and solid school community remains unbreakable.
“These are some important things to understand TPS values:
“We don’t question the immigration status of the family or the student at the time of enrollment. We don’t share information about immigration status with ICE. The Supreme Court’s verdict in 1982 on Plyler vs Doe states that every child has the constitutional right to be educated no matter the immigration status, and at TPS we gladly welcome immigrant and refugee families.
“We honor the dignity and equity of our transgender students and those with gender differences. These students have the right to present themselves conforming to their own gender identity, always following the rules of proper dressing just like all other students. They have also the right to use the bathrooms, lockers and amenities that match their own gender identity.
“In times of uncertainty, fear and confusion we are aware that children seek the support of the family adults to try to understand what they hear and see. We need to make a huge effort to become an example of inclusion and tolerance, encouraging our kids to be the agents of change this country needs. Together we can make a better future for all.
Wishing you all the best, Deborah.”
