builds homes for Tulsa families

-

Last Friday March 24th at 9 a.m., Habitat for Humanity built the walls of the fifth Tulsa home benefited by the program, and this time for a Hispanic family.

The new home of the Guerra’s is located on Atlanta Avenue at the Kendall Whittier neighborhood and will have three bedrooms and two bathrooms for their three children.

During the building event, the family explained they had been wanting to buy a bigger place for a long time, and had to work hard to accumulate some savings to make an initial deposit. But a friend from a friend told them they could apply for a mortgage through the program “Tulsa Habitat for Humanity”, and make the initial deposit not with money but offering their work as volunteers for the organization.

The family entered the program and started accumulating volunteer hours and finally gathered all the requirements needed to have their own place. “The most important thing is being able to give a home to our children, one were they can have more space and a better future, everything that we do, we do it for them”, said the Guerra’s.

The father of the family, Hilarion, left San Francisco del Rincon, a city in Guanajuato, Mexico twelve years ago to come to Tulsa hoping for a better job. Even if he felt homesick for leaving his parents and friends behind he was happy to have found a prosperous Hispanic community that welcomed him open arms. And in that community he found his wife, Sandra, original from Reno, Nevada.

Hilarion works on the construction industry and Sandra is in charge of raising the kids; the family of five lived on a mobile home that is why they needed a house so badly. Luck wasn’t with them at the beginning and they weren’t able to save enough to pay initial deposits, in the end Habitat did what they do best, restore hope and restore hearts with the promise of a better future.
