El teatro Taco Truck llega a Tulsa

TULSA, OK – El artista José Torres-Tama vuelve a Tulsa la semana que viene con un show socialmente provocativo y visualmente deslumbrante. Torres-Tama & ArteFuturo Productions se presentarán en el Living Arts de Tulsa el jueves 18 y viernes 19 de mayo de este mes.

TULSA, OK -- Performance artist José Torres-Tama returns to Tulsa next week with shows that are sure to be as socially provocative as they are visually stunning. Torres-Tama & ArteFuturo Productions will be presenting shows at Living Arts of Tulsa on Thursday & Friday, May 18 & 19.
“Desde el 2013 he visitado Tulsa varias veces para investigar la ley antiinmigrante de Oklahoma del 2007 y el efecto que ha tenido en la comunidad latina para poder llevar a cabo esta obra”, le dijo Torres-Tama en exclusiva a La Semana. “El guion de esta obra se inspiró en las entrevistas que realicé entre los inmigrantes de Tulsa, y el resultado es un proyecto conjunto guiado por una música ecléctica como base en la cual me ayudaron mis colaboradores musicales”.
Inspirado en el legendario Teatro Campesino de Luis Valdez que se realizaba sobre las camionetas en las que viajaban los trabajadores agrícolas inmi- grantes de California en la década del 60’, Torres-Tama & ArteFuturo Productions ponen en marcha el proyecto Taco Truck Theater / Teatro Sin Fronteras para desafiar la deshumanización de los inmigrantes y el concepto de “ilegales”.
Torres Tama utiliza un viejo camión de tacos y lo convierte en un teatro sobre ruedas, provocativo, dinámico y acompañado de sonidos musicales híbridos creados por la vocalista, poeta y chelista Monica McIntyre yMichael Ward-Bergeman, acordeonista y músico de instrumentos múltiples. “Ningún ser humano es ilegal”, aseguraron los músicos.
“Tenemos un escenario que viaja dentro del camión y lo preparamos para todos los shows en exterior”, explicó Torres Tama .
El conjunto artístico se asocia con el movimiento Black Lives Matter para explorar intencionalmente la Amnesia”, un sistema que TorresTama cree, seduce a los ciudadanos a abrazar el olvido.
Junto al ensamble ArteFuturo se presentan los poetas y activistas de Tulsa, Sally Ramirez y los DREAMers Amairani Perez y Jordan Mazariegos. Acompañando al ensamble en New Orleans están Alana Kolundzija, artista bilingüe y directora escénica.

“Since 2013, I have made numerous trips to Tulsa to research Oklahoma's anti-immigrant law of 2007 and its effect on the Latina/o community for the current project,” Torres-Tama told La Semana. “The actual performance script is also inspired by the many interviews I conducted in Tulsa of the immigrant community, and this is an ensemble project driven by an eclectic hybrid music sound-bed with my musical collaborators.”
Inspired by Luis Valdez’s legendary Teatro Campesino shows on flatbed trucks in the 60s that brought attention to the plight of migrant workers in California with public performances, Torres-Tama & ArteFuturo Productions roll out the Taco Truck Theater / Teatro Sin Fronteras Project to challenge the dehumanization of immigrants as “illegal aliens.”
Re-purposing a used box truck into a theater on wheels, TorresTama bring his shamanistic juju to a provocative and visually dynamic performance driven by a hybrid musical sound-bed forged by Monica McIntyre, cellist, vocalist, and poet, and Michael Ward-Bergeman, accordionist and multi-instrumentalist. “No human being is illegal,” they proclaim.
“We have stage that travels inside the truck, and that we assemble for all of our outdoor shows,” Torres-Tama explained.
Also, the diverse ensemble aligns with the Black Lives Matter movement to intentionally explore the parallel struggle of people of color in what it calls the “United States of Amnesia,” a system that Torres-Tama believes seduces its citizens to embrace forgetting.
Joining the ArteFuturo Ensemble are Tulsa poets and activists Sally Ramirez and DREAMers Amairani Perez and Jordan Mazariegos. Accompanying the New Orleans ArteFuturo Ensemble is Alana Kolundzija, bilingual stage manager and performer.
