Variedades Vicki: where customers come first
Jamie Bustos y Jesus Bustos están casados desde hace 31 años. Ella es americana nacida en San Antonio, Texas y él Mexicano oriundo de Guerrero. Se conocieron en la década del 80’ mientras trabajaban en un restaurante, y desde entonces el amor hizo que su sueño se convirtiera en realidad: ser dueños de su propia tienda, aquí en Tulsa.

Jamie Bustos and Jesus Bustos have been married for the last 31 years. She is American, born in San Antonio, Texas, and he is Mexican, born in the state of Guerrero. They met back in the 80s while working together at a restaurant and love made their dream come true, owning their own store here in Tulsa.
Vicki Variedades se encuentra al 2601 Este de la calle 11 y como bien dice su nombre vende de todo, alimentos, cosas para la casa y además presta servicio de transferencias de dinero; claramente es él lugar a donde ir si necesitas comprar algo en el centro de Tulsa.
La tienda está siempre llena, no sólo porque vende buenas cosas, sino porque todos los que ingresan por el umbral de la puerta se sienten bienvenidos y respetados. “La clave del éxito es saludar al cliente con una gran sonrisa y decirle hola ni bien entra por la puerta”, explicó Jesus, que sabe que su negocio marcha bien pero admite que el trabajo a veces lo aparta de la familia. “Aquí tratamos a todo el mundo por igual, no importa la raza, el color, el origen nacional, los clientes son bienvenidos”, agregó Jesus, poniéndole una pizca de amor al éxito.
La pareja ama trabajar a la par, y asegura que lo que los ayuda a trabajar duro, es básicamente hacerlo juntos. “Siempre trabajamos juntos, desde el principio. Si me caigo yo se que él me levanta, si él se cae, estaré allí. Estamos pegados juntos”, admite Jamie.
El amor es la única explicación para el éxito de Variedades Vicki y el de este matrimonio de tantos años que ha contagiado el espíritu de su tan variada clientela.
“Aquí primero está dios, después el resto, el trabajo duro y la familia”, dijo Jesús. “La ecuación es Amor a dios, a la familia, a tu esposo y a tu prójimo”, agregó Jamie, recordándonos que algo tan sencillo como querer, puede ser el camino a la felicidad.
La pareja ama vivir en Tulsa pero sabe que algunas nubes anuncian tiempos difíciles a futuro. “Los americanos no están dispuestos a hacer los trabajos de los hispanos, sólo quieren que se les pague un cheque a fin de mes”, dijo Jamie con indignación. “Es por eso que tenemos que ayudar a nuestros hijos con el ejemplo, mostrándoles lo que significa tener un hogar y una familia”, dijo Jamie.

Variedades Vicki, is located at 2601 E 11th St, and there they specialize in groceries, basic items and even money wires, and for the last 16 years has been the place to go for shopping in the quiet neighborhood just west of the University of Tulsa. The store is always busy, not only because they sell good products, but because all the customers feel welcomed and respected.
“They key for success is welcoming the client with a huge smile, no matter what, and greeting him when he comes through the door,” explained Jesus, who knows business is good but sometimes can be tricky, especially when it keeps you from spending time with the ones you love.
“Here we treat everyone the same, it doesn’t matter your origin, your skin color, your religion, all clients are greeted,” he said.
The couple loves working, and says what makes the partnership work is actually working together.
“We have always worked side by side, since the beginning,” said Jamie. “If I fall, he has my back, if he falls I’m there for him -- we are stuck together for life.”
Love seems to be the another reason for the success of Variedades Vicki and the long happy marriage of these two, a secret ingredient that has spread throughout the neighborhood.
“First comes God, then the rest, working hard, being with the family,” expressed Jesus.
“Basically the equation is God, love for the family, love for each other, and love for the people,” said Jamie.
The couple enjoys living in the city but are aware of the rough times that may lie ahead.
“Americans are not willing to do the jobs of Hispanics, we only want to be paid a check,” said Jamie. “That is why we need to help our children by showing them by example what it means to have a home, to build a family.”
