Tulsa Family Safety Center, an option for displaced families

-

La Semana had the opportunity of interviewing Suzanne Stewart, Executive Director of the Tulsa Family Safety Center, who explained how the center works to help those in need.

The Center was born back in 2006 as a nonprofit organization created by neighbors inside the Tulsa community who wanted to bring some hope and protection to the almost 12000 victims of domestic violence. The center is a shelter where people can spend the night, can learn ways to overcome trauma and find psychological help if needed to cope in struggling times.

According to the Executive Director the center welcomes all those people that have been victims of family violence and that want to report the issue to the authorities, regardless of their immigration status. If you are undocumented, do not fear, family counselors will focus on your domestic problems not on your papers.

Free and confidential services are available in a wide range of areas, including assistance with emergency protective orders; assistance with law enforcement reports; chaplain services; children’s play area; civil legal assistance and advice; consultation with district attorney staff; counseling referral for adults; forensic medical services; interpretation services; referral for children; referral for immigration services; referral to safe, confidential emergency shelter; and safety and prevention education.

The Family Safety Center is located in downtown Tulsa inside the Police Courts Building, 600 Civic Center, Suite 103, Tulsa, OK 741033822, and is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need help call the 24 hour emergency helpline
