TULSA, OK – Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah A. Gist last week released the following special message about DACA to the Tulsa community:

“We have a responsibility to protect and provide for all of our children, regardless of their immigration status. Without the protections provided under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, nearly one million children who were raised here in our country may lose their hard-earned and well-deserved American dreams. The Tulsa Public Schools team and I implore the United States Congress to take swift action to develop and pass legislation to ensure that those young people protected by DACA are able to continue to live, work, learn, and contribute to our communities.
“Dreamers are part of the Tulsa Public Schools family - they are our students and staff, and we are better for their many contributions and diverse perspectives. There are Dreamers who are leaders in our community, working tirelessly to effect positive change for our great city. Dreamers are from all walks of life, and they are an invaluable part of the rich tapestry of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the United States of America.
“At the founding of our nation, a group of immigrants came together and declared that ‘all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ This is the American Dream as put forth at the birth of our country, and this is the America that every child deserves. To our Dreamers, immigrants, and refugees: know that we love you, we stand with you, and we will do everything in our power to protect you, support you, and help you achieve your American dreams.”
