La Conexión Médica o (CHC) es conocida por ser la clínica de la comunidad hispana de Tulsa, prestando servicios a la ciudad desde el 2004, ofreciendo atención de calidad, de fácil acceso, y de manera completamente bilingüe para las familias de bajos recursos, sin seguro médico o con cobertura parcial. Si bien muchas personas en la comunidad conocen a la clínica y saben que es un lugar de atención para toda la familia, no todos conocen la variedad de servicios que aquí se ofrecen. La Semana recientemente dialogó con la nueva directora médica de la clínica, la Dra. Leah Upton quien nos explicó las oportunidades en salud preventiva y tratamiento que ofrece CHC en Kendall Whittier y la sede del Este de Tulsa.
Como muchos otros médicos la Dra. Upton tiene una historia personal que marcó su camino hacia el campo de la salud. “Mi padre tenía una enfermedad muy seria cuando yo era chica y estuvo hospitalizado durante mucho tiempo”, recuerda Upton. “Creo que me impresionó ser tan chica y entender la importancia que tenía el cuidado de la salud, no sólo para el paciente sino también para la familia, la comunidad y todos quienes nos rodeaban”.
El compromiso de Upton de ayudar a otros combinado con su amor por las lenguas y la diversidad de culturas influenciaron su destino haciéndola misionar en Nicaragua en el 2012. Hoy en CHC Upton sigue asistiendo a los pacientes de lengua hispana y se convirtió en directora médica de la institución en septiembre de este año.
Upton indicó que entre las principales cuestiones de salud que enfrentan sus pacientes hispanos está el síndrome metabólico que in- cluye la obesidad, el colesterol, la diabetes y la alta presión. “Hay muchas enfermedades crónicas que pueden causar complicaciones que después se convierten en las grandes enfermedades que conocemos en la comunidad hispana”, dijo Upton agregando que el personal de CHC intenta siempre dar lo mejor para educar a los pacientes sobre cómo prevenir estas enfermedades o reducir su dificultad. CHC ofrece servicios de nutrición, clases de cocina y hasta clases aeróbicas sin cargo abiertas a todo el público.
Upton dijo que las circunstancias de la vida no deben ser una barrera para tener acceso igualitario a la salud. “Nuestra meta es ayudar a todos, no importa si tienen seguro o no, si tienen documentos o no, no se controla el prontuario de la gente”.
Quienes sólo hablan castellano tienen un aliando en CHC, “El 80% del staff es bilingüe”, explicó Upton. La directora médica explicó que CHC ofrece una variedad de servicios para toda la comunidad que van más allá de los cuidados primarios, entre estos se destaca la salud dental, salud prenatal y hasta una clínica para adolescentes.
La clínica emplazada en la calle 3ra y Lewis cuenta también con una farmacia en la que los pacientes pueden obtener medicaciones a menor precio que en otros lados.
En un futuro cercano CHC planea fundar una nueva clínica adyacente a la elementaría Ochoa en la 31 y Garnett. Esta clínica ofrecerá servicios de oftalmología además de la atención a la familia que brindan las otras clínicas. “El nuevo edificio podrá duplicar nuestra capacidad de pacientes”, informó Upton.

Community Health Connection (CHC), or La Conexión Médica as it’s known to Tulsa’s Hispanic community, has been serving the city since 2004, offering affordable, quality, bilingual health care to the area’s low-income, uninsured and underinsured families. But while most people in the community are by now aware that Community Health Connection is a convenient and practical place for your family to receive basic medical care, not everyone knows the variety of new services the growing clinic is offering. La Semana recently visited with CHC’s new Medical Director, Dr. Leah Upton, who explained the many opportunities for both treatment and preventive care available to patients at CHC’s Kendall-Whittier and East Tulsa locations.
Like many in the medical profession, Dr. Upton has a personal story that influenced her decision to enter the field.
“My dad had a very serious illness when I was young and he was in the hospital for a long time,” Upton recalled, “and I think that impressed on me at an early age the importance of health and what the impact of health is, not just for the patient but for the family, the community and everyone around them.”
Upton’s commitment to helping others, combined with her love of different languages and cultures, led her to serve on a humanitarian medical mission in Nicaragua in 2012. Upton’s service to Spanish speaking patients continues today at CHC, where she became Medical Director in September of this year.
Upton said among the most pressing health issues facing her Hispanic patients is metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
“A lot of chronic diseases that raise your risk for later complications we know are of great concern in the Hispanic community,” Upton said, adding that CHC’s providers and staff try to go the extra mile in educating patients about how they can live healthier lives to prevent such illnesses or to reduce their severity. CHC also offers nutrition and healthy cooking classes as well as aerobics classes, all free of charge and open to the public.
Upton said that life circumstances should not be a barrier to receiving quality medical care.
“Our mission is to serve everyone,” she explained, “whether they are insured or uninsured, underinsured, documented, undocumented – there isn’t any kind of background we don’t try to reach out to.”
For those who only speak Spanish, this is not a barrier to getting care at CHC.
“Over 80% of our staff is bilingual,” Upton said.
Upton said that among the additional services CHC offers and of which the public may not be aware are dental care, prenatal care, and a special confidential clinic to meet the needs of the community’s teens.
CHC’s 3rd and Lewis location also has a pharmacy where patients can have their prescriptions filled at often dramatically lower prices than at commercial pharmacies.
Planning for the future, next year CHC plans to break ground on a new clinic adjacent to Ochoa Elementary near 31st and Garnett. The state-of-the art facility will offer optometry as well as the full range of family medical care already available at CHC’s existing clinics.
“The new building will double our capacity to see patients,” Upton said.
