The World Cup begins in Russia
The World Cup returns this week, the spectacular celebration of the Beautiful Game that may well be the last cup of its kind. The 32 qualifying teams have already gathered in Russia and, as usually happens around this time every four years, the conflicts of nations on the battlefield will take a back seat to those on the football pitch.

With a wintertime World Cup in 2022, rule changes that will expand the number of teams to 46 just two cups from now, and a possible “mini world cup” tournament at the two year cup interval, Russia 2018 stands to be the last “classic” tournament as we have come to know it.
So who are the players to watch? Igor Mello of CBS Sports listed his top ten (those not named ‘Messi’ or ‘Ronaldo’) some of whom may be better known than others: Neymar, 26, Brazil; Mohamed Salah, 25, Egypt; Kevin De Bruyne, 26, Belgium; Edinson Cavani, 31, and Luis Suarez, 31, Uruguay; Paul Pogba, 25, and Antoine Griezmann, 27, France; Harry Kane, 24, England; David de Gea, 27, Spain; and Thomas Muller, 28, Germany. Russia vs. Saudi Arabia will kick things off on Thursday morning, with highly anticipated matches Egypt vs. Uruguay and Portugal vs. Spain on Friday, Argentina vs. Iceland on Saturday, and Germany vs. Mexico on Sunday, when later in the day Brazil will take on Switzerland.
Many local soccer fans will surely be rooting for Mexico, which hopes to break its 24-year “World Cup Curse.”
