At an event held last Friday for media and friends of the museum, Philbrook Director Scott Stulen offered a preview of what to expect from Philbrook during the coming year, both at the main museum at 2727 South Rockford Road and at Philbrook Downtown at 116 East M. B. Brady St.
Amazing!, opening October 14, features prints by Mel Bochner, whose pieces are often described as being both thought provoking and humorous, challenging expectations. “[T]he artist asks us to question preconceived notions about the world and instead face the work before us,” the museum explains. Amazing! will be presented at the Rockford location and will run through January 7, 2019.
An event that truly stretches many people’s preconceptions about museums is a program called “Tattoo Roulette” on September 14, featuring three of the nation’s leading tattoo artists.
“This is an event to get tattooed, and here’s how it works,” Stulen explained. “You walk up, you spin a wheel that has tattoos on it – and these are real tattoos, not fake ones – and whatever it lands on is what you get, and for real. This sold out in 10 minutes, so if you want to come and be a spectator, come and join us on Sept. 14.”
Stulen said the museum staff thought long and hard about fun tieins for turning 80 this year, and chose celebrating the 1980s as one way this could draw visitors to Philbrook. Classic arcade games are being brought it for museum guests to play, and a vinyl record store is being added to Philbrook’s gift shop. In addition, two classic movies from the period will be screened on the Philbrook Lawn, Back to the Future and UHF on Sept. 21 and Labyrinth and The Shining on October 26. Philbrook will host an 80s trivia night on Sept. 28, and 80s music video and dance parties in November.
Ballet in the Gardens is coming to Philbrook on Sept. 29, a collaboration between the museum and Tulsa Ballet featuring new choreography by Ma Cong, new music by Ryan Lot of Son Lux, new costumes by Emma Kingsbury, and new art created live by Eric Sall.
Philbrook Downtown presents Remember This, a video art exhibition featuring the work of five artists, now through January 6, and beginning February 19 will show Joel Daniel Phillips’ work “exploring the burgeoning oil industry in Oklahoma and Southern California in the 1950s.”
The holidays are always a special time at Philbrook, and this year Santa will be available for photos with the kids in Philbrook’s new Log Cabin installation in the Philbrook Gardens.
