Meet the 2018 judicial and D.A. candidates

-

The Coalition for the American Dream (ADC) will host a “Justice System Meet and Greet” so Tulsans can meet the current Tulsa County District Judges, the Tulsa County District Attorney, and all their opponents. The event will held at Salon Hacienda at Plaza Santa Cecilia at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, October 2nd.

ADC president Blanca Zavala told La Semana the “meet and greet” was put together in response to questions from voters.

“One of the most common questions we get when we are in the field doing voter registration is ‘Who are the judges and how do I know who to vote for?’” Zavala explained. “So we decided to get as many of the judicial candidates as possible in one place so people can speak to them directly.”

In addition to the judges and their opponents, Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler, a Republican, and his opponent, Democrat Jenny Proehl-Day, have also been invited to participate.

“It seemed logical to add the District Attorney candidates as well,” Zavala said. “People are busy and might not have another opportunity to meet these individuals who have such a strong impact on our community.”

While the District Attorney race is partisan, the judicial races are not, and

candidates for district judge do not need to disclose any party affiliation. The Tulsa District Judge seats to be decided on November 6th are: Cliff Smith vs. Brian Crain Linda Morrissey vs. Chris Brecht Caroline Wall vs. Tom Sawyer Martha Rupp Carter vs. Rick Westcott Sharon Holmes vs. Blake Shipley James Caputo vs. Tracy Priddy

District judges earn $131,835 per year, and the District Attorney earns $129,198.

“This will be a rare opportunity to meet these current and hopeful members of the justice system, some of whom are already deciding cases and others who might be in the near future,” Zavala said, adding that interpreters will be on hand so that the candidates can communicate effectively with their Hispanic constituents.
