TULSA, OK -- More than 1,900 secondary students at Tulsa Public Schools participated in advanced placement (AP) courses during the 2017-2018 school year, and the district today announced that more than 200 students at four high schools received AP Scholar Awards for academic achievement in those courses. The schools with award-winning scholars are Booker T. Washington High School, East Central High School, Edison Preparatory School, and Memorial High School.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program gives students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school. Students who earn a 3 or higher on an AP exam can earn college and advanced placement credits. Research shows AP students are better prepared for and more likely to enroll and remain in college, do well in classes, and earn their degrees on time.

Superintendent Deborah A. Gist said: “We’re incredibly proud of the strong academic progress our AP scholars are making! Tulsa students are fortunate to have the opportunity to get a head start on college-level coursework with more than 200 AP offerings available at high schools throughout our district, and we look for- ward to continuing to increase access to AP classes over the coming year.”

Booker T. Washington student Cassandra Powell was named a National AP Scholar, receiving an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams and taking eight or more exams. Powell had an average score of 4.67 on nine exams. Eight graduates from Edison Preparatory School received the AP Capstone Diploma: Landon Bakhsh, Annabelle Harris, Samuel Knight, Julia Manipelle, Allyson McCormick, Harper McIntyre, Zaira Paredes, and Michael Schauf. Edison is one of just five high schools in the state to offer the AP Capstone program.
