Miller, 44, and Mannford Police Officer Michael Nealey, 49, were in Pensacola Beach, Florida for a law enforcement conference, but sometime after 9:00 pm on Sunday night, an alcohol fueled fight in a room at the Pensacola Beach Hilton got loud and then turned fatal.
Witnesses reported hearing crashing sounds and one man repeatedly yelling, “Stop it Mike.”
A maintenance worker responded to a noise complaint, reportedly finding Nealey sitting on top of Miller, whom police said was “unresponsive and without a pulse.” Miller’s face appeared to have been beaten, with one eye badly swollen.
Initial reports indicate that no weapon was found in the room.
A report filed by Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies stated that when Nealey was pulled off of Miller, his face hit the floor, injuring Nealey’s nose and lip. Nealey was said to be mumbling incoherently.
It is not known what led to the argument between the two men who were described as close friends in the community of 3180 people just West of Tulsa on Keystone Lake.
The City of Mannford broke the tragic news to its residents shortly after 11:00 am on Monday, with Mayor Tyler Buttram stating, “We are heartbroken by the news.”
“With sadness we report the death of Mannford Police Chief Lucky Miller who died November 10, 2019 in Pensacola, Florida,” the city posted on its Facebook page. “Details of the incident are not fully known at this time. Miller, 44, has been Mannford Police Chief since 2007. He is survived by his wife, Amber, and three children.”
Nealey is charged with Second Degree Murder and is being held in the Escambia County jail on $500,000 bond. Nealey did not look up during his Tuesday morning bond hearing.
