Bloomberg wants to reform the immigration system and protect dreamers
The former mayor of New York and candidate in the Democratic primary, Mike Bloomberg, announced today his intention to reform the “old” and “ineffective” US immigration system, to end the separation of families at the border, increase the number of refugees and protect dreamers.
“The immigration system is obsolete, inhuman and does not position the United States for growth.” That is the idea of Bloomberg, who deployed his immigration management plans on Monday in a new gesture towards the Latino community marking distances with President Donald Trump, since he even intends to order an investigation into the “abuses” of the Service of Immigration and Customs Control (ICE) of the USA.
For this reason, the Democratic candidate has launched his plan to modernize an immigration system, which he considers “broken”, and thus favor immigration to work for the economy, “restoring American values and ending the inhuman practices defended by the President Donald Trump, who are ineffective, wasteful and cruel, like separating families and caging children, and instead rescuing protections for dreamers. ”
These “dreamers” are 2.8 million migrants who arrived without papers in the US when they were children and are part of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country.
The Bloomberg plan seeks to modernize border points and implement measures to protect national security and, at the same time, welcome immigrants who need the economy.
It should not be forgotten that Bloomberg aims to have 11 million undocumented people “present themselves, register, pay the fees and taxes owed and pass the background checks”, in order to proceed to regularize them.
“The demonization by President Trump of immigrants and his revival of fear and hate are an ugly chapter in American history that we must close,” said Mike Bloomberg, who believes that “immigration does not threaten the United States, strengthens it.” .
“I led what is the immigration capital of our nation (New York) for 12 years and I know how much immigrants strengthen our economy and communities. The United States does not need more of Trump’s spread of fear: what we need is a system of modern immigration that honors our history and prepares us for the future, and, as president, I will succeed, “he promised.
In his view, federal spending on immigration law enforcement, including detention and deportation, now exceeds spending on all other federal criminal law enforcement agencies combined, according to a 2019 report from the Institute of Policy Migration.
In addition, “Trump has diverted billions in military funds to pay an ineffective border wall, while the waiting times caused are ineffective at points of entry into the US,” which in the case of Mexico “could cost us 69,000 million (of dollars) in GDP “.
Bloomberg takes an investigation into the “USA TODAY Network” media, according to which since President Trump took office, there have been more than 400 allegations of sexual abuse or abuse and at least 29 deaths in detention centers supervised by the agency of immigration from the United States.
