Mika Hakkinen se atreve a vaticinar que Valtteri Bottas puede ser campeón en 2020. El bicampeón mundial de F1 (1998 y 1999) no es objetivo, claro está, porque gestiona la carrera del piloto finlandés junto a su propio ex mánager Didier Coton.
"Valtteri goza de una excelente posición en Mercedes. Es un gran piloto y estoy seguro de que pilota mejor que nunca. Tengo unas expectativas extremadamente altas de que sea campeón mundial este año, y en eso hemos trabajado muy duro durante años, dándole todas las herramientas para que llegue allí. Ha estado trabajando muy duro", señala Hakkinen en el podcast 'F1 Nation'.
Bottas se juega mucho esta temporada. Se habla de que Mercedes está pensando en renovar a Lewis Hamilton y situar de pareja del británico al joven George Russell. Además, Sebastian Vettel, que está sin equipo para 2021 por su anunciada salida de Ferrari, también es candidato al asiento del equipo dominador de la era híbrida.
Así las cosas, Bottas ha contactado con Renault para intentar asegurarse un asiento de cara a la temporada venidera. A ese puesto en la marca del rombo aspira también Fernando Alonso. Y también está la opción de Vettel.
Precisamente, sobre el futuro de Seb ha opinado también Hakkinen. "Si quiere ganar, tiene bastante difícil encontrar equipo", subraya. No obstante, el finlandés valora mucho un aspecto positivo: Vettel es relativamente joven (el próximo 3 de julio cumple los 33 años). "Lo bueno es que su edad no es un problema. Todavía es un chico joven", asegura. Y concluye sobre su marcha de la 'Scuderia': "Tuvo una gran decepción con Ferrari. El disfrute del trabajo en equipo desapareció para Vettel, ya no disfrutaba tanto dentro del equipo. Fue criticado enormemente todo el tiempo y dentro de un equipo eso tiene que ser compartido". 918-361-4077
The coronavirus pandemic saw the season-opening Australian Grand Prix cancelled at short notice in March, and the campaign is now set to get under way in Austria on July 5.
Bottas will be out to quickly prove his worth to Mercedes, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel without a seat for 2021 after agreeing to leave Ferrari.
Meanwhile, team-mate Lewis
Hamilton will be hoping to win the championship for a fourth straight year and take his overall haul to seven titles, equalling the record set by Michael Schumacher.
However, two-time champion Hakkinen believes Bottas is primed to challenge for glory in 2020.
"Valtteri has a great position in Mercedes. He's a mega great driver, and I am confident that he's better than ever," Hakkinen told the F1 Nation podcast.
"I have an extremely high expectation for him to be world champion this year – and that's what we've been working very hard on for years, [giving him] all the qualities, all the tools for him to get there. He's been working hard."
On Vettel's future and his departure from Ferrari, Hakkinen added: "His age is not a problem, he's still a young guy.
"He had a big disappointment with Ferrari, the enjoyment of the teamwork disappeared for Vettel, I think. He didn't enjoy it so much anymore inside the team because he was criticised all the time and when you're in the team it has to be shared.
"If he wants to win, it's pretty tough out there."
