Guatemala City.- An alleged Guatemalan drug trafficker sought in extradition by the United States, where he is accused of exporting cocaine shipments from South America, was captured this Saturday by the authorities, the Central American country's Prosecutor's Office reported.
The Public Ministry (Prosecutor's Office) coordinated with the police the apprehension for extradition purposes of Juan Carlos Chacón Alvarado, also known as "El Diablo" or "Mister 305", Juan Luís Pantaleón, head of information and press of the the institution, AFP reported.
The official explained that Chacón Alvarado is required to appear in a Texas court for the crimes of conspiracy to illegally send cocaine to the United States, as well as to manufacture and distribute the same drug to illegally export it to that country.
The investigation identified "a large-scale drug trafficking organization" operating from the south to the north of the American continent, he said.
During the investigations, it was determined that Chacón Alvarado was responsible for "transportation, direction, management and supervision of the organization's drug trafficking activities in Guatemala," he said.
The detainee also has an arrest warrant in force in Guatemala for the crimes of storage, trafficking and illicit drug trade and conspiracy to murder.
The alleged drug trafficker is the sixteenth arrested in 2021 in Guatemala to be extradited by the US justice.
According to the authorities, large international cartels, with the help of local drug traffickers, use Guatemala and the rest of Central America to transport drugs and launder money, activities that affect the criminal violence that plagues the region.according to the United States, 90% of the cocaine that reaches that country passes by airplanes, boats and submarines through Mexico and Central America.
