TULSA, OK – Tulsa Honor Academy school officials were joined April 23 by board members, scholars and families to announce a middle school seat expansion location and unveil its name. In August 2021, Tulsa Honor Academy will begin serving an additional 125 middle school scholars at its new school facility located at 15th and Sheridan.

“This campus will utilize space here in our new school facility, the former Pennwell building, and construction has already begun to ensure classrooms and ancillary spaces will be ready to open the doors in August,” Founder and Executive Director, Elsie Urueta Pollock said.

Founded in 2015 with 92 fifthgrade scholars, Tulsa Honor Academy has grown to serve more than 685 scholars in 5th-10th grades. The expansion of middle school seats will serve 5th and 6th graders in the 20212022 school year and will later grow to serve 5th-8th grade students in addition to its current middle school location at Admiral and Lakewood.

“We dream of closing the educational and economical gap for our scholars and their families. By expanding middle school seat availability, we can have more impact than ever before,” Urueta Pollock said.

In an area of great need, the additional seats will reside in east Tulsa where a majority of Tulsa Honor Academy scholars live and the area in which THA aims to serve. Tulsa Honor Academy believes all scholars are capable of going to and graduating from college.

The campus name, Tulsa Honor Academy Middle School– Flores Campus, was chosen in honor of Pollock’s mother, Elsi Flores Walkabout. Flores Walkabout, a Latina immigrant, knows the value of education and is a champion for access and opportunity for Tulsa scholars and families.

“I feel like my children had the opportunity of a good educational teaching, which has made them successful professional people. I can see the same success coming in the future for many THA students and families,” Flores Walkabout said.

THA ended its announcement with members of the THA Familia rallying together to recruit families for the next school year.

“Expanding the middle school means one more option to offer a high-quality education to more kids and therefore, better opportunities for their future. Tulsa Honor Academy not only prepares scholars to achieve a successful life, but it also equips them with the core values to help their community,” said Amparo Martinez, a founding THA parent.
