The US government announced that it will give most immigrants whose work permits are about to expire, or even those who have recently expired, an extension so that they can continue working in the country for at least another year and a half.

“As USCIS works to address pending EAD caseloads, the agency has determined that the current 180-day automatic extension for employment authorization is currently insufficient,” said Ur M. Jaddou, USCIS Director. Now, the agency will increase “the automatic extension period for employment authorization and Employment Authorization Documents (EADS), available to certain EAD renewal applicants, to up to 540 days.“

The automatic extension of work permits that have pending renewals and that will go from 180 to 540 days “will take effect immediately on May 4, 2022,“indicates the statement from the Immigration and Citizenship Service.

“This temporary rule will provide those noncitizens otherwise eligible for the automatic extension an opportunity to maintain employment and provide critical support for their families, while avoiding further disruption for U.S. employers,” Director Jaddou added.

The immediate extension of the authorization to work in the United States will benefit about 87,000 immigrants whose work permits have already expired or whose work permits will expire within the next 30 days, added the EFE news agency.

BUDGET PROBLEMS
