- USA extends work permits for immigrants for a year and a half.

- This will allow thousands of foreigners to continue working in the US while USCIS processes the renewal of their permits.

- The extension of these work permits also “stabilizes the continuity of operations of US employers.”

GOOD NEWS! The United States extends work permits for immigrants for a year and a half, which will allow thousands of foreigners to continue working in the US while the Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) processes the renewal of their permits.

The US government announced that it will give most immigrants whose work permits are about to expire, or even those who have recently expired, an extension so that they can continue working in the country for at least another year and a half.

US EXTENDS WORK PERMITS FOR IMMIGRANTS FOR A YEAR AND A HALF

The Citizenship and Immigration Service says that this decision will greatly help immigrants with employment in the United States and that “it will help avoid pauses in the employment of foreigners whose work permit renewal applications are pending.”

The extension of these work permits also “stabilizes the continuity of the operations of US employers” that count on the work of these immigrants, the agency acknowledged. Finally, the measure is beneficial for immigrants and employers, while USCIS processes permit renewals.

WHEN WILL IT TAKE EFFECT?

“As USCIS works to address pending EAD caseloads, the agency has determined that the current 180-day automatic extension for employment authorization is currently insufficient,” said Ur M. Jaddou, USCIS Director. Now, the agency will increase “the automatic extension period for employment authorization and Employment Authorization Documents (EADS), available to certain EAD renewal applicants, to up to 540 days.“

The automatic extension of work permits that have pending renewals and that will go from 180 to 540 days “will take effect immediately on May 4, 2022,“indicates the statement from the Immigration and Citizenship Service.

IMMIGRANTS WILL BE ABLE TO KEEP THEIR JOBS

“This temporary rule will provide those noncitizens otherwise eligible for the automatic extension an opportunity to maintain employment and provide critical support for their families, while avoiding further disruption for U.S. employers,” Director Jaddou added.

The immediate extension of the authorization to work in the United States will benefit about 87,000 immigrants whose work permits have already expired or whose work permits will expire within the next 30 days, added the EFE news agency.

BUDGET PROBLEMS

Although the measure benefits immigrants and employers, it is also due to a budget problem since “USCIS has been in a precarious financial situation that has impaired the efficient completion of caseloads.” The arrival of the pandemic in 2020 only brought more difficulties.
