Reminder of safe foods for dogs during the holidays
Here is a friendly reminder of what Rover can and cannot have during your holiday feasts
Hi Everybody,
Its that time of the year again.
For some it will be very different, especially those that enjoy gathering with groups of loved ones this time of year. But for our dog, all they know is that they smell a big fat turkey. And then some….
Here is a friendly reminder of what Rover can and cannot have that may be included in your holiday feast.
As you are feeling the piercing stares of Fido’s puppy dog eyes, do not give in to giving the following:
NO NOs:
• Nuts
• Ham
• Chocolate
• Grapes
• Leeks
• Onions
• Grapes
• Raisins • Raw potatoes
• Mashed potatoes
• Raw dough
• Canned Cranberry
• Pie
• Stuffing
***These items can actually be very toxic to dogs and create a serious illness if not worse. While waiting for Vet advice you can induce vomiting with 3% hydrogen peroxide. The dosage is one teaspoon per five pounds of body weight with a maximum of 3 tablespoons for dogs more then 45 pounds. Dogs will usually throw up within 15 minutes of ingesting this liquid and often continue to throw up for up to an hour. They do need to be watched. You never want to make a dog throw up chemicals or sharp objects and do not give to dogs that have eaten the toxic foods two hours prior. Remember to always consult with a Vet under these circumstances.
The YES list:
In small amounts please • Carrots
• Corn
• Sweet potatoes
• Green Beans
• Apples
• Pumpkin
• Rice
• Quinoa
• A little Cheese
• Turkey but no fat or bones In the event you do have guests, keep in mind where people leave their purses for busy pups to rummage through. Where people leave their dinner plates and where they set their alcoholic beverages. Unsuspecting guests may give in to your innocent dogs glares and stares but family and friends need to be kindly reminded to not feed the Fido. Some dogs prefer fine wine and some just like beer, but neither of these beverages will promote for holiday cheer.
Most Vets are closed on Thanksgiving and some will have an emergency back up physician on call.
Enjoy your holiday and apply some preventative medicine to avoid the need for any other medicine.
