Runners compete in all types of weather conditions

High school cross country will run in the winter this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a first for the sport in the North Coast Section. The fall sport usually begins in late summer and extends deep into the fall, which is not to say runners are immune from competing in winter-type conditions as was the case for Middletown’s Abi Murphy and other Coastal Mountain Conference runners during the 2017 CMC Championships in early November at Point Arena on the Mendocino County coast. Murphy finished 16th overall in the North Central League I race on that very wet autmun day with a time of 24 minutes, 45 seconds. Middletown’s top runner that day was Grace Southern, who finished sixth overall and third in the NCL I race with a time of 21:05. Two current-edition Middletown runners who could be in action before the end of the month are senior Isaiah Diaz and sophomore Nicole Pyzer. Both are coming off strong campaigins in 2019.
