It’s back to action for local preps

MHS cross country hosts 6-team meet Wednesday

LOWER LAKE >> Nearly a calendar year after the last high school contest involving a Lake County sports team took place, the COVID-19 moratorium is over. On Wednesday, Middletown High School cross country is hosting a six-team meet at Six Sigma Ranch near Lower Lake and three county teams — Clear Lake, Upper Lake and host Middletown — will be there.

Rounding out the field will be runners from Calistoga, Cloverdale and PUC Prep. The racing begins at 3:30 p.m.

Cross country, classified as a low-contact outside sport by the state, is among the first sports to be allowed. Golf and tennis will follow in the coming weeks along with baseball, softball and track and field. The long-delayed cross

country season — which usually runs from late August to late November — will consist of six weeks of meets, beginning Wednesday at Six Sigma. Other race dates are March 17, March 24, March 31, April 7 and April 14. Beginning March 17, three venues will host races every Wednesday.

Middletown also hosts races on March 24 and April 7.

“We could not be more excited!” Middletown head coach Taylor Tiraterra said. “We have been out here running and hoping for a season since the school year began. I know how hard these kids worked, and I am so happy they will finally get a true season.”

An all-Lake County meet takes place March 17 when Lower Lake hosts Clear Lake, Kelseyvill­e, Middletown and Upper Lake.

Upper Lake, which is fielding a cross country team for the first time since the 2016 season, hosts a pair of meets — on March 24 and April 7, and Clear Lake and Kelseyvill­e are participat­ing on both dates.

Kelseyvill­e hosts Clear Lake and Upper Lake on March 31 and Middletown and Upper Lake on April 14.

In addition to hosting the all-Lake County meet on March 17, Lower Lake is home again April 14.

Cross country meets are generally divided into two races, with junior varsity boys and girls running together first followed by the varsity boys race.

Unlike past seasons there will be no North Coast Section or CIF State

Championsh­ip meets because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last time Lake County cross country runners were in action of any sort was November of 2019

at the North Coast Section Championsh­ips in Hayward. The last Lake County sports team to see action was the Upper Lake softball squad on March 12, 2020, at Willits.
