“We placed 10th as a team overall — not an easy task with this year and the competition we faced with both North Bay and South Bay combining. There were nearly double the teams as last year,” said Coach Sabalone. Because of the pandemic, “It was very different compared to what we are used to, but we are pros at adapting
to changes, so it really didn’t set us back terribly, and we still competed and did great,” added Isabel Sanchez. “I am hoping that the State competition is the same as County was, so that we are aware of what we are doing. If it is different, I won’t be too worried, because we can change with the changes that come to us.”
According to the coach, main benefits of the program include teaching teamwork, individual and group time management and operation skills, how to study, how to weave and synthesize information, networking and preparation for college and working environment. “As a former decathlete, I can attest to the fact that the Academic Decathlon experience truly teaches you how to be a lifelong learner, and be a part of the world. Additionally, and very important this year, is it provides a support network,” concluded the teacher.
