A minute later one of Chief Goldfeather’s female assistants came to the Chief’s table from the office next to the Gift Shop. ‘Here it is, Chiefie,’ she smiled, leaning closer than I thought necessary. She rested her ample bosom on his shoulder as she handed him a photograph. The Chief mumbled, with a glazed look as he watched her walk away.

She was quite an eyeful,” Henry said with a small smile of embarrassment.

Henry appreciates the ladies but he would never do anything to upset Gladys in a million years.

The Chief told the rest of the table, ‘Miss Swayhips is an especially valuable assistant. I couldn’t do my job without her.’ “

“He picked up the photo Miss Swayhips had brought. It was a picture of a grinning, slightly disheveled female of middle age. She was holding an oversized display card and the card was a picture of a Grandfather clock. The price beneath the clock was $6500.”

“Chief Goldfeather explained, ‘We picked up the ticker at Smedly Imports for chicken feed.’ He turned to his accountant, Charley Wampum. ‘What did we pay for it, Charley?’ ‘Fifteen hundred and change’.”

“Wampum pointed to the photo. ‘That’s Mrs. Clumper. Mrs. Clumper framed her copy of this photo and hung it up in the middle of her front room. She’s pretty proud of the picture and its right next to her clock.’”

Henry said tome ,“By the sound of the Chief’s voice and the look on his face I could tell the Chief had gotten serious. ‘Last night, when Mrs. Clumper came in, she lost everything on her husband’s Visa Card. She cleaned out the family bank account. By the night was over, she offered us the title on her house.’ “

“The Chief’s remark shocked me more than a little,” Henry said. “Gladys keeps asking me what we could get for the farm if we had to sell…”

“The Chief did not appear to be much ashamed when he said it. ‘Yeah, I took the Title. I figured if she was sap enough to gamble away the old homestead, who am I to deprive a customer of her pleasure? Since then I’ve hired a Home and Property Appraiser to service our customers. That way if they want to bet their home we can run right away to phone the County Records office to give them credit for the amount it is worth.’”

For the first time Henry seemed angry. I was too.

“The Chief seemed quite proud of himself. He went on to say, ‘We offer a complete service for our customers.’ “

“Then,” Henry said, “The Chief looked at Professor Yung. He had a new question. ‘Prof, you being a Psychologist and all, maybe you can tell me why the heavy smokers are the ones who gamble most. Why is that?’ The professor answered the Chief right away. ‘Clinical studies have shown that the addictive personality succumbs easily to any form of euphoric.

That includes cigarette smoking, drugs of all kinds, alcohol, and, of course wagering. Mrs. Clumper appears to be a perfect example of the premise, Gentlemen.’”

“Professor Yung looked over at the slot machine where Mrs. Clumper was feeding money into her Egyptian Wonder Slot Machine like money was going out of style. ‘I can see from here the lady has lit up a cigarette again, the fourth in fifteen minutes. I venture to say that Mrs. Clumper enjoys a nip or two regularly as well.’”

“When Professor Yung said that the Chief got on the bandwagon with a new idea. ‘Hmm, Wampum,’ He says to his accountant, ‘Tell Bob Red Horse to look into that right away. Get a list of cigarette smokers in the County and send out some good-looking flyers to each one of them. Hit hard on the threepacks-a-day smokers.’”

“That’s when the Chief got up and brought the men to his Security Office, Henry said. The Chief said, ‘You two might be interested in what I got in my Security Office. It might give you some more good ideas to up my take on the slots.’
