Shade Canyon School invites interested families and community members to see Waldorf education in action at upcoming Shade Canyon Watch Parties. One takes place Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and another is Thursday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Held via Zoom, the Shade Canyon Watch Parties include a short film about Waldorf education followed by a questionand-answer session with Shade Canyon School initiative co-founders Morgan Chinnock and Savannah Mitchell.

“The Waldorf curriculum inspires me,” Chinnock said, “and I look forward to sharing this film with our community so they can get a real sense of what Shade Canyon School’s program will be like.”

Local nonprofit Shade Canyon is submitting a petition May 21 to the Kelseyville Unified School District (KVUSD) Board to be authorized as a public charter school in the district. If authorized, the Waldorf-inspired school would open in September of 2022 with grades from transitional kindergarten through third grade, then expand by one grade each year until it offers a full transitional kindergarten/K-8 program. All Lake County students would be eligible to attend tuition free.

Shade Canyon’s curriculum is designed to educate the students’ head, heart and hands through handson learning, integrated subjects, outdoor exploration, movement, storytelling, practical skills and the arts.

Meaningful relationships with highly-trained teachers ensure students are met in their developmental stages and are taught according to their individual personalities and learning styles. Waldorf students become critical thinkers who are curious about the world, connected to their communities and confident shaping them.

Shade Canyon School is a tuition-free, Waldorfinspired public charter school initiative in Lake County. The school gleans its name from the saddle canyon on Mount Konocti that, long ago, shaded canyon oak seedlings so they could grow into a lush, towering forest. The school initiative is guided by this vision: “By honoring simplicity, we nurture the spark of the individual and nourish a thriving community.” Their mission is to cultivate inspired learners.
