… can be a challenge! Especially when you want your seasonal, or holiday, trimmings and décor to complement your Interior design elements — not clash with them!

When it comes to special occasions such as Autumn and Winter holidays, the choice is there to go with traditional colors and elements — the usual reds, greens, silver and gold. But your choices and ideas can really go much further, much more innovatively and much more compatible with the elements you carefully chose and decided upon when appointing your Interiors.

Using the classic colors, shapes, symbols and elements is great — if that is where you want to exercise your creative energy; but contemporary design has broken past habits and symbolic restrictions, and opened up a much broader scope and very interesting departures! There is absolutely no reason why different shapes, different symbols and even outrageously different colors can’t barnstorm those habit patterns and break new ground.

When it was usual to tour the great retailers’ shop windows for beautiful scenes and magical holiday decorations, we often took an idea from here and a technique from there! We would get the makings and imitate some of the glamour for our own homes and businesses. Unfortunately, COVID has also affected the elaboration of some of those trends — we hope only temporarily.

It can be a new adventure to select your existing color schemes and enhance your holiday using those colors and shapes in a creative break from the norm. Unique wreaths and ornamentation can blend beautifully with your existing Interior choices. It might take a bit more of a search, but you may be surprised at the availability of non-traditional adaptations.

On the non-traditional end of things, electronics and digital assist has brought a startling number of changes in lighting effects! From the tiniest strings of light that you can wiggle down into antique bottles for delightful, subtle twinkling, to projected light shows or scenes against outer surfaces — today’s celebration decorating is really show-stopping.

If you have recently completed your Interior design project, you are probably already familiar

with the huge range of new innovations, accessories and techniques one can choose from for beautiful, seasonal and functional Interior appointing. You are secure in the choices you have made, and that means that you would have no problem going another step or two with relevant additions for holiday focus.

Holiday entertaining opens the door wide for compatible florals, and even food presentation that reflects the colors and shapes in your Interior design. It may be a new way to look at it, but stepping just a little away from “our usual” can really be fun! Look around at your basic Interior; what shape dominates? Angular? Circular? Random? You can pluck the patterns and replicate them onto your table setups, buffet layout or appetizer presentation!

The message here is to encourage you to play along the themes you already have in place, and give them a celebratory twist! If you “decorate” at all and your focus is mainly the exterior of home or business, you have the opportunity to connect interior/exterior by introducing some of your Interior schemes — color, lighting — to your outside environment. We are all familiar with bringing the greenery and trees inside — why not a little turn-about?

There are so many aspects to holiday celebrating! Some is based in belief systems and religious or spiritual connections. Some is about special family traditions; some just the fellowship of friends and loved ones spending time together, remembering stories and experiences. When we place symbols and uplifting décor in and on our personal or business environments, we are reaching out, sending very personal messages for very special reasons!

Be sure to enjoy both the process and the ex
