MHS QB Hartzog honored

Senior is recipient of $1,000 scholarship

MIDDLETOWN >> Hunter Hartzog, the starting quarterback for the Middletown High School varsity football team this past season, has been honored by the Lake/ Mendocino branch of the Northern California Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

Only seniors are eligible for the $1,000 college scholarships. The top back and lineman from each branch throughout the Northern California Chapter is honored each year based on a formula of athletic achievement, classroom achievement and leadership.

Hartzog was the only athlete nominated by member schools in Lake and Mendocino counties, meaning one of the two $1,000 scholarships, for the area's top lineman, went unused.

Hartzog was voted Middletown's MVP on offense during the 2022 season, one in which the Mustangs reached the North Coast Section playoffs. The team's head coach, Bill Foltmer, won his 300th career game along the way and finished the season with 301 victories, 282 of those at Middletown.

In the classroom, Hartzog maintained a 3.52 GPA. One of his classes was AP Calculus. He helped out with the Middletown Colts youth football program and also with a youth pheasant hunt hosted by the Konocti Rod & Gun Club.

“He is well liked and respected by his peers as well as the faculty at Middletown High School,” Foltmer said of Hartzog, who along with playing quarterback also saw time on defense at free safety and cornerback. “In the classroom Hunter does well.”

Hartzog can use the $1,000 scholarship at the college of his choice.
