Middletown golfers continue to roll
The Middletown High School golf team had three of its members shoot in the 70s at the Windsor Golf Club on Wednesday and their team score of 341 put them atop the leader board during first round play at the Coastal Mountain Conference Golf Championship. The CMC Championship is a 36 hole tournament with team play as well as an individual qualifier. Middletown has already clinched the league title as well as a spot in the North Coast Section playoffs that will be held on Monday, May 6th at the Peacock Gap Golf Course in San Rafael. The five low scores after 36 holes who are not on the MHS golf team will be able to advance to sections as individuals. The second round of the CMC Championship is on Monday, April 29 at the Valley of the Moon Golf Course at Oakmont.
Cooper Johnson started out hot, running off three birdies on the front nine at Windsor. The Middletown senior, who is a two time Lake County Junior champion, cooled off a bit but still carded the low score of the day with a +4 over par 76. One stroke back was Cooper's teammate and cousin, Bodhi Moore, who put up a 77. Dom Williams, the number one ranked golfer in league play this year, was next with a 78. Jackson Conley struggled with back soreness and shot an uncharacteristic 110. Middletown widened its standing in the league and is now a perfect 28-0.
Technology High School finished in second place with a team score of 374. St. Helena put up the same number, but Tech won the tie-breaker based on the score of its sixth man. Leading Technology were Sebastian Maurice and Sam O'Halloran, both of whom shot 90. Devon Engebreth shot a 91 for Tech. St. Helena finished in third place and was led by Ethan Peterson's score of 83. Teammate Micha Meraz Ha posted an 89. St. Helena is still holding on to second place in the league standings with a 1711 record while Technology is close on their heels with a 1612 mark. Sonoma Academy finished in fourth place with a team score of 399. Their best score of the day was a 95 by Lucca Modica. Kelseyville remained in the CMC's basement after putting up a score of 465. Adam Astrup shot a 103, Caleb Lopez posted a 112, Nate Sherman came in with a 115, and Andrew Nave shot 135. Sonoma Academy carries an 8-20 record while the Kelseyville golfers are 1-27.
After one round, Ethan Peterson is leading the low qualifier race with his 83. Micha Meraz Ha is six strokes back with an 89. Both play for St. Helena. A trio of Technology High School golfers is next. Sebastian Maurice and Sam O'Halloran carded 90s while Devon Engebreth holds down the fifth spot with a 91. Nothing will be finalized just yet as a pair of Sonoma Academy golfers, Lucca Modica and Eli Goldberg, are in close pursuit.
