Mariners bolster bullpen, trade for Caminero, Venditte

-

The Seattle Mariners bolstered their bullpen Saturday by acquiring right-hander Arquimedes Caminero from Pittsburgh and switch-pitcher Pat Venditte from Toronto.

Both deals were for players to be named later.

The Mariners announced Venditte would report to Triple-A Tacoma, while Caminero will report to Seattle. Caminero, 29, who throws in the upper 90s, had a 3.51 ERA in 39 appearances for the Pirates. He appeared in 73 games last season for Pittsburgh and also pitched parts of two seasons with Miami.

Venditte, 31, appeared in eight games this year with Toronto and had a 5.19 ERA.

To clear spots on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated for assignment right-handers Donn Roach and Blake Parker. Roach, 26, is a Bishop Gorman product.

YANKEES — The team announced it will hold a news conference with Alex Rodriguez before Sunday’s game against Cleveland.

The Yankees did not detail the purpose of the gathering.

The 41-year-old designated hitter has one start and seven at-bats since July 22 as the Yankees turn toward a youth movement. He has 696 home runs.

NATIONALS — Washington placed first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist contusion and called up outfielder Brian Goodwin from Triple-A Syracuse.

The move with Zimmerman, 31, was retroactive to Monday.
