Rangers’ Je≠ress still out as MLB looks into arrest
Texas Rangers reliever Jeremy Jeffress remained away from the team Saturday while Major League Baseball looked into his arrest on a drunken driving charge.
Jeffress, 28, was put on MLB’s restricted list Friday, hours after he was booked into the Dallas County jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Thad Levine, the team’s assistant general manager, said the players’ union was working closely with the commissioner’s office, along with Jeffress and his agent, to “determine a best course of action moving forward.”
Levine said he didn’t know the timeframe for a decision, noting MLB still was in a fact-finding mode and that Jeffress could face a suspension.
NATIONALS — National League MVP Bryce Harper was ejected in the 10th inning of Washington’s 9-4 loss to Colorado after getting called out on strikes.
The Las Vegas native immediately yelled at plate umpire Mike Winters from close range and threw his helmet to the ground after being tossed.
“It just shouldn’t happen,” Harper said of Winters’ third-strike call. “Just bad behind there. It’s not a strike.”
The ejection was the eighth of Harper’s five-year career and second this season.
MARINERS — Seattle placed right-handed reliever Tom Wilhelmsen on the 15-day disabled list with lower back spasms and added depth to its bullpen.
Right-hander Dan Altavilla was promoted from Double-A Jackson, and Pat Venditte, who throws with either hand, was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
The Mariners also recalled first baseman Dae-Ho Lee from Tacoma, while outfielder Norichika Aoki and infielder Mike Freeman were optioned to the minor league club.
