Olympic champ Shiffrin captures third straight slalom world crown

Mikaela Shiffrin was in a world of her own, extending her unbeaten record in slalom gold medal events.

The 2014 Olympic champion won her specialist event at a third straight ski world championsh­ips by a huge margin of 1.64 seconds in St. Moritz, Switzerlan­d.

The 21-year-old from Vail, Colorado, was nerveless, ruthless and stylish, turning a first-run lead of 0.38 over the home fans’ favorite Wendy Holdener into a rout.

UNLV SOFTBALL: At Eller Media Stadium, rain washed out the third day of the DeMarini Desert Classic, with UNLV’s scheduled game against Memphis (4-3) moved to 9 a.m. Sunday. The Rebels (6-2) are to face Idaho State (0-2) at 1:30 p.m.

UNLV BASEBALL: At Wilson Stadium, rain washed out the second day of the UNLV Classic, with the Rebels’ scheduled game against Saint Mary’s (1-0) canceled. UNLV (10) is to face UC Davis (0-1) at 3:05 p.m. Sunday.

HORSE RACING: At Albany, Calif., Zakaroff won at 48-1 odds in the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields, beating favored Ann Arbor Eddie by a half-length. Owned by Antone Metaxas, trained by Steven Specht and ridden by Kyle Frey, Zakaroff earned 10 points toward a Kentucky Derby berth.

TRACK AND FIELD: At Birmingham, England, four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah, 33, marked the final indoor race of his career by breaking his European record over 5,000 meters in a Grand Prix win. He finished in 13 minutes, 9.16 seconds.

FIGURE SKATING: At Pyeongchan­g, South Korea, 17-year-old Japanese star Mai Mihara captured the women’s title with 200.85 points at the Four Continents, a test event for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: At Doha, Qatar, Karolina Pliskova beat Caroline Wozniacki for the first time in four matches, posting a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the Qatar Open final for her second WTA title of the year and eighth overall. MEN’S TENNIS: At Buenos Aires, Argentina, top-seeded Kei Nishikori beat local wild card Carlos Berlocq 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Argentina Open final against Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine.
