Oda, men’s golf team second in Mountain West tournament

John Oda shot 2-under-par 70 for an 8-under 136 total and is alone in second place, helping the 14th-ranked UNLV men’s golf team move into a tie for second heading into the final round of the Mountain West Championsh­ips in Tucson, Arizona.

Oda, a junior, who led after the first round, is one stroke behind leader Brian Humphreys of Boise State.

The defending champion Rebels, who were third after one round, are tied with Boise State at 11-under 565 — two strokes behind leader Colorado State and two strokes better than first-round co-leader San Diego State in the 11-team field.

Softball: At Fort Collins, Colo., Janine Petmecky hit a go-ahead three-run double in the sixth inning to back Charlie Masterson (4-3), who pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings of relief in leading UNLV (23-19, 6-8 Mountain West) to a 7-4 victory over Colorado State (22-17, 7-10).

Men’s tennis: At San Diego, straightse­t singles wins by Evaldo Neto and Charlie Croxford were the highlights for UNLV (17-8, 4-3 Mountain West) in its 4-2 loss to San Diego State (9-14, 4-3) in the teams’ regular-season finale.

Baseball: At Albuquerqu­e, N.M., Jack Zoellner hit a three-run homer and a two-run double to power New Mexico (22-16-1, 13-2-1 Mountain West) to its second straight 13-4 victory over UNLV (14-27, 7-13).
