Strong pitching sends UNR to baseball win over Rebels

Grant Fennell went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI to back Mark Nowaczewsk­i’s complete-game pitching effort and lead UNR to a 4-1 win over UNLV in a Mountain West baseball game Saturday in Reno.

Nowaczewsk­i (5-5), a Reed High School product, held the Rebels (18-34, 8-18) to one run on six hits and three walks and struck out five.

Desert Oasis product Bryson Stott hit a leadoff home run in the second for UNLV, which was answered in the bottom of the inning by a solo shot from Green Valley product Keaton Smith. Stott finished 2-for-4.

The Wolf Pack (17-31, 11-4) got to Rebels starter Garrett Poole (2-7) for four runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings.

■ Softball: At Eller Media Stadium, Alyssa Navarro hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning to back Morgan Ettinger (13-17), who gave up one earned run in seven innings, as UNLV (25-27, 8-16 Mountain West) closed its season with a 4-2 victory over league champion San Jose State (36-17, 16-8).

■ Track and field: At Logan, Utah, Kaysee Pilgrim cleared 6 feet, 2 3/4 inches in the high jump to set a Mountain West record and rank first nationally this season, helping UNLV to a thirdplace finish in the league outdoor championsh­ips.
