Oregon State rallies, slips past Fullerton to open World Series

Adley Rutschman hit a tiebreakin­g RBI single in the eighth inning, Jake Mulholland pitched 4 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, and Oregon State rallied to beat Cal State Fullerton 6-5 in the College World Series opener in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Beavers (55-4) extended their winning streak to 22 games after falling behind by four runs as national wins leader Jake Thompson scuffled in 3 2/3 innings against the Titans (3923).

In Saturday’s other game, Greg Deichmann drove in the go-ahead run during an eighth inning in which Florida State (45-22) committed three errors on one play, and Louisiana State (49-17) held on to win 5-4 for its 17th straight victory.

Awards: Louisville pitcher/first baseman Brendan McKay, the fourth pick in the MLB draft by Tampa Bay, won the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball’s top player. He is 10-3 with a 2.34 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 104 innings and is batting .343 with 17 home runs and 56 RBIs.
