■ Formula One: At Baku, Azerbaijan, Lewis Hamilton moved to second on the all-time list for F1 pole positions when he used a late surge to beat Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The British driver’s 66th pole moved him one ahead of Ayrton Senna and two behind Michael Schumacher’s record of 68.

■ NHRA: At Norwalk, Ohio, Matt Hagan posted his third No. 1 Funny Car qualifier of the year with a track-record 3.865-second pass at 333.33 mph in the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals. Doug Kalitta led Top Fuel qualifiers, Greg Anderson led in Pro Stock and Matt Smith in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

■ IndyCar: At Elkhart Lake, Wis., Helio Castroneves won his 50th pole and third of the season, turning in a 1-minute, 41.30-second lap in Kohler Grand Prix qualifying at Road America. He edged Team Penske teammate Will Power, who won last year’s race, by .06 seconds.
