Good Samaritan stuns starry field, wins Jim Dandy Stakes

-

Good Samaritan stormed to the lead in the stretch and won the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, in what was billed as a showdown between the winners of the first two legs of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown.

Good Samaritan, who never had raced on dirt, beat Giuseppe the Great by 4 3/4 lengths as the two long shots in the race finished in front.

Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming was third, Pavel placed fourth, and Preakness winner Cloud Computing finished last in the five-horse field in the Grade II $600,000 race.

Bing Crosby Stakes: At Del Mar, Calif., Ransom the Moon took advantage of untoward circumstances to win the Grade I $300,000 race by 1½ lengths after Drefong, the champion sprinter of 2016, swerved badly shortly after the start and unseated jockey Mike Smith.
