DACA numbers

Although I appreciate Daryl Morris’s defense of the DACA population and note he raises some valid points (“Recipients of DACA program overwhelmingly good citizens,” Monday letter to the editor), I have to question his statement that “91 percent are employed” and have paid “billions” of dollars in taxes. I don’t even believe that data is available.

There are roughly 800,000 who are considered “dreamers.” On average, they came here when they were between 5 and 8 years old. Many are just into their 20s, according to articles. Their salaries would have to be extremely high to pay that much in taxes (billions) over such a short time.

Also, Mr. Morris is confused as to who is a DACA individual because he states some were “born in this country.” He should know that if they were born here, they are already legal citizens and do not need protection from being deported.

It is frustrating to see people throw out facts that can’t be supported. One fact came out the other day is that only about 800 are serving in the military, which is less then 0.1 percent. I respect those serving and understand the voluntary military is not for everyone. But, again, many articles make it sound like there are a lot more serving in the armed forces. Unsubstantiated facts are not sufficient. Ed Wagner Las Vegas
