DAY 3 AT A GLANCE

- Tom Spousta Review Journal

■ Scoring struggles: Steady winds and serious gusts again came to the defense of TPC Summerlin. Among the 78 players, only 22 subpar rounds were posted. Average scores for the third round were 72.19, slightly lower than Friday’s 72.28 but a full stroke higher that the first round’s 71.17. The par-3 eighth hole played the toughest (3.3 average score), while the par-5 13th was the easiest (4.66).

■ Hoffman happy to be here: Charley Hoffman broke his streak of three consecutive missed Shriners Open cuts and found himself tied for 10th. He’s six strokes back. “I can still sort of feel the leader, so if I get hot tomorrow, who knows?” Hoffman said. The former UNLV golfer’s presence on the weekend also guaranteed a check for the Direct Impact Fund via PGA Tour Charities to aid victims of the Oct. 1 mass shooting in Las Vegas. Hoffman said before the tournament he would donate all his earnings.

■ Kraft collapse: Kelly Kraft charged into the lead at 11 under par with a birdie at No. 2, but his stay was brief. He carded three bogeys and a double-bogey in the next four holes, took another bogey at No. 8 and shot 40 on the front nine. He finished with a 79 and was tied for 18th, seven strokes from the lead.

■ Third-round fades: Kraft wasn’t the only player among the second-round leaders blown down the leaderboard. Treacherous winds also took a toll on Robert Garrigus, who followed a 65 with a 77, and Patton Kizzire, who went from 66 to 76.
