William D. McGovern, age 99, passed away peacefully December 23, 2017, at home. Born in 1918, in Brooklyn New York, he raised his family in Garden City, New York before retiring to Scottsdale, Arizona and Las Vegas, where he resided until his death. Mr. McGovern served in World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He retired from the Fire Department of New York City after 25 years as a member of Engine Company No. 164. Mr. McGovern was preceded in death by his dearly beloved wife, of over 60 years, Frances Sarah. He is survived by his five loving children, Terrance of Las Vegas, William Jr. (Elizabeth) of Garden City, New York, Michael (Jennifer) of Falmouth, Massachuse­tts, John (Christine) of Overland Park, Kansas, and Kathleen Thornburg (Hal) of Las Vegas. Mr. McGovern also leaves behind 12 cherished grandchild­ren, William III, Patrick, Brendan and Aidan, Mary McGovern Mahaney (Brian) and Megan, Matthew, Connor and Jack, and Andrea Tenzer and Vance Thornburg; and one great-grandchild, Connor Thornburg. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, at Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave. Funeral Mass will be at noon Wednesday, January 3, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive. Burial will be at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, January 4, at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City.
