RB Forte placed on IR; career as Jet in limbo

-

Matt Forte’s season is over. His career with the New York Jets might be, too.

The 32-year-old running back was placed on injured reserve Saturday, a day before the Jets’ season finale at New England.

Forte said earlier in the week that he had been slowed the last month with increased swelling in his surgically repaired right knee. He finished his second season with the Jets with a career-low 381 yards rushing.

Forte has a year remaining on his contract, but he’s due to make $3 million next year, and the Jets could opt to clear that amount on the salary cap.

Despite his diminished production, Forte said he wants to keep playing — and hopes it is with the Jets.

■ Center Corey Linsley signed a three-year, $25.5 million contract extension through the 2020 season.

Linsley, 26, is in his fourth season with Green Bay, which drafted him out of Ohio State in the fifth round in 2014. He has started all 53 regular-season games in which he has played and is the lone Packers offensive lineman to start every game this season.

He also has started all seven of the Packers’ postseason games since 2014.

■ General manager Dave Gettleman announced his first move in his new role, firing Marc Ross, New York’s vice president of

player evaluation for the past five seasons.

Ross, one of four candidates to interview for the GM position, had been with the Giants since 2007, serving six years as director of college scouting. He also had been in charge of the Giants’ draft.

Among the players New York drafted under Ross were wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard, safety Landon Collins and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.

■ Rookie cornerback Sidney Jones is expected to make his season debut Sunday after being activated to Philadelphia’s 53-man roster.

Jones, a two-time All-Pac-12 first-team pick at Washington, had nine interceptions and forced six fumbles in 39 college starts. The Eagles drafted him in the second round at No. 43 overall.

Jones has been rehabilitating from an Achilles injury, suffered in April at Washington’s pro day. He has been practicing with the Eagles since Dec. 13.

■ Long snapper Kevin McDermott was placed on injured reserve, forcing Minnesota to break in a new specialist before the playoffs.

McDermott, 27, hurt his shoulder on Dec. 23 at Green Bay, and backup tight end David Morgan stepped in as the emergency long snapper against the Packers.

The Vikings signed Jeff Overbaugh last week for the final regularseason game against Chicago, but now Overbaugh will have the job for the postseason, too.
