Arizona topples No. 3 Arizona State

TUCSON, Ariz. — Deandre Ayton had 23 points and 19 rebounds, including a crucial tip-in with 11 seconds to go, and No. 17 Arizona held on to hand No. 3 Arizona State its first loss of the season, 84-78 on Saturday.

Findlay Prep product Allonzo Trier, who missed his first six shots but finished with 23 points, made two free throws to put the Wildcats (113) ahead 82-78 with 10.3 seconds to go in the teams’ Pac-12 opener.

Tra Holder made 15 of 16 free throws in a 31-point effort for the Sun Devils (12-1). But ASU’s other two usually sharpshoot­ing guards, Shannon Evans and Cody Justice, combined to shoot 5-for-23 — including 2-for-14 on 3-pointers.

The Wildcats beat the Sun Devils in Tucson for the eighth straight time. Arizona State’s loss left no unbeaten teams remaining in NCAA Division I.

Butler 101, No. 1 Villanova 93 —

At Indianapol­is, Kelan Martin scored 24 points and Paul Jorgensen 23 for the Bulldogs (12-3, 2-0 Big East), who ended an unbeaten start by the Wildcats (13-1, 1-1) for the second straight year. Jalen Brunson had 31 points for Villanova, which cut a 23-point deficit to six with 1:33 left. Villanova had allowed an average of 65.8 points per game.

No. 4 Duke 100, No. 24 Florida State 93 —

At Durham, N.C., freshman Marvin Bagley III had 32 points and 21 rebounds for the Blue Devils (13-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who held on when the Seminoles (11-2, 0-1) missed their final eight shots. Phil Cofer scored 28 points for Florida State.

Alabama 79, No. 5 Texas A&M57—

At Tuscaloosa, Ala., John Petty made five 3-pointers and totaled 18 points for the Crimson Tide (9-4, 1-0 Southeaste­rn Conference). The Aggies (11-2, 0-1) were without top scorer D.J. Hogg (suspension) and starter Admon Gilder (knee injury).

No. 6 Xavier 77, DePaul 72—

At Cincinnati, J.P. Macura, who scored 19 points, had a steal and a blocked shot in the final minute to cap a comeback from a 16-point deficit by the Musketeers (14-1, 2-0 Big East). Max Strus scored 33 points for the Blue Demons (7-7, 0-2).

No. 9 Virginia 59, Boston College 58 —

At Charlottes­ville, Va., Ty Jerome hit two free throws with 53 seconds left and totaled 31 points with six 3-pointers for the Cavaliers (12-1, 1-0 ACC). Jerome Robinson had 29 points for the Eagles (10-4, 1-1).

No. 12 Oklahoma 90, No. 10 Texas Christian 89 —

At Fort Worth, Texas, freshman Trae Young scored 39 points, including the tiebreakin­g free throws with 7.9 seconds left, and had 14 assists for the Sooners (11-1, 1-0 Big 12), who ended the nation’s longest win streak at 17 games. Kenrich Williams had 22 points for the Horned Frogs (12-1, 0-1).

No. 13 North Carolina 73, Wake Forest 69 —

At Chapel Hill, N.C., Joel Berry II hit a high-arcing floater in the paint with 10.3 seconds left to put the Tar Heels (12-2, 1-0 ACC) ahead to stay. The Demon Deacons (76, 0-1) allowed the game’s final eight points.

Arkansas 95, No. 19 Tennessee 93, OT —

At Fayettevil­le, Ark., Daryl Macon scored 33 points and Jaylen Barford 28 for the Razorbacks (11-2, 1-0 SEC), who trailed by nine inside the final seven minutes of regulation. Jordan Bone had 21 points for the Volunteers (9-3, 0-1).
