Martin, UNR hold on to topple New Mexico

RENO — Caleb Martin scored on successive possession­s in the last two minutes and totaled 24 points to lead UNR to a 77-74 Mountain West win over New Mexico on Saturday.

Lindsey Drew swatted away a potential tying 3-pointer by Chris McNeal with two seconds left and scored 13 points for the Wolf Pack (13-3, 2-0).

Jordan Caroline had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and UNR improved to 19-1 in games that he has a double-double.

Anthony Mathis hit five 3-pointers and totaled 17 points for the Lobos (6-9, 1-1), who trailed 42-34 at halftime.

New Mexico tied it at 70 with 4:55 left after a 7-0 run capped by consecutiv­e 3-pointers by Mathis. Martin scored the Wolf Pack’s final six points from the field.

The Lobos missed two 3-pointers in the last seven seconds.

Colorado State 59, San Jose State 52 —

At San Jose, Calif., Prentiss Nixon scored 19 points for the Rams (8-7, 1-1), who overcame 22.2-percent first-half shooting and a 31-20 intermissi­on deficit to post their first road win of the season. Ryan Welage had 16 points for the Spartans (3-10, 0-2), who missed three shots in the final 40 seconds of their 16th straight loss to Colorado State.

Fresno State 71, Air Force 59 —

At Fresno, Calif., Deshon Taylor scored 18 points, and Ray Bowles Jr. added 16 on 7-for-9 shooting for the Bulldogs (11-4, 1-1), who shot 53 percent from the field and held the Falcons (6-8, 0-2) to 38 percent. Ryan Swan had 13 points to pace Air Force, which trailed 31-24 at halftime and by double digits for most of the second half.

San Diego State 79, Utah State 59 —

At San Diego, Devin Watson scored 15 points for the Aztecs (9-4, 1-1) in their 10th straight victory over the Aggies (8-7, 1-1). Sam Merrill had 18 points for Utah State, which had won three in a row.
