Late touchdown pass decides 93rd East-West Shrine Game
Texas Tech quarterback Nic Shimonek threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Houston wide receiver Steven Dunbar with 1:23 left to give the West a 14-10 victory in the 93rd EastWest Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Wisconsin safety Natrell Jamerson returned a fumble by Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett 68 yards for the West’s other TD in the nation’s longest running college all-star game.
■ Tennessee State: Four bowl subdivision transfers — Alabama linebacker Mekhi Brown, Minnesota quarterback Demry Croft, Illinois linebacker Christion Abercrombie and Connecticut cornerback John Robinson IV — joined the Tigers and are eligible to participate in spring practice this year.
■ NFLPA Collegiate Bowl: At Pasadena, Calif., Louisiana State defensive tackle Frank Herron returned a fumble for a touchdown for the National team, which held the American team to 215 yards of offense in a 23-0 win — the Nationals’ seventh victory in as many games.
■ Washington State: Coach Mike Leach said there were no outward signs that would have alarmed coaches or teammates before Tyler Hilinski, the Cougars’ presumptive starting quarterback next season, took his own life Tuesday.
■ Alabama: The Crimson Tide and tens of thousands of fans celebrated their fifth national title in nine years with a parade in Tuscaloosa that extended to the north steps of Bryant-Denny Stadium.
