Ovechkin pads goals lead, ties team mark as Caps top Sabres
WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin added to his NHL lead with two goals on the night he tied the Washington record for most games played, and the Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres 5-1 on Saturday.
Ovechkin’s 37th goal came on a power play with 9:47 left after Buffalo closed within 2-1 on Sam Reinhart’s goal 14 seconds into the third period. Ovechkin redirected a shot past Sabres goaltender Robin Lehner with 1:24 to go for his 38th goal.
Ovechkin, 32, played in his 983rd NHL game, tying Calle Johansson for most in Capitals history. Ovechkin holds franchise records for goals (596) and points (1,105).

■ Red Wings 3, Hurricanes 1 — At Detroit, Henrik Zetterberg scored the go-ahead goal in the second period to tie Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay for fifth on Detroit’s career list at 335.
■ Devils 2, Islanders 1— At Newark, N.J., Kyle Palmieri scored twice in the third period, and Taylor Hall had two assists to extend his NHL-best points streak to 14 games.
■ Flames 5, Avalanche 1— At Calgary, Alberta, Mikael Backlund had a goal and two assists, and rookie Jon Gillies had 28 saves in his second straight win.
■ Coyotes 2, Ducks 0 — At Glendale, Ariz., Antti Raanta had 26 saves in his second shutout in three games and halted Anaheim’s four-game win streak.
■ Blue Jackets 3, Blackhawks 2 — At Columbus, Ohio, Pierre-Luc Dubois had a goal and an assist to back winner Sergei Bobrovsky, who stopped 31 shots.
■ Oilers 4, Kings 3 — At Los Angeles, Michael Cammalleri had three assists against his former team, helping Edmonton win its second straight.

At Ottawa, Ontario, Brandon Manning had a goal and two assists for Philadelphia, which won its fifth in a row.
