Ovechkin, Caps thrive outdoors

-

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Alex Ovechkin moved closer to 600 career goals as the Washington Capitals put on an offensive showcase in beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 outdoors Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Ovechkin scored his 40th goal of the season and 598th of his career. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson and Jakub Vrana also scored for Washington, which hardly looked like a team that recently had lost four of six to shrink its large lead atop the Metropolitan Division.

The Capitals got 27 saves from Braden Holtby in their second consecutive victory.

Washington was lights out well before the lights went out at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, a power surge that caused a roughly 15-minute delay midway through the third period.

The lopsided effort sent many fans to the exits at the second intermission, though some of those remaining used their cellphones to light the stadium during the extended stoppage.

Ovechkin became the sixth NHL player with nineplus 40-goal seasons, joining Wayne Gretzky, Marcel Di onne, Mario Lemieux, Mike Gartner and Mike Bossy. Carlson got first-star honors with a goal and two assists.

The offensive fireworks of the first two periods — including three goals in the first 6:19 — matched the pomp and circumstance of the NHL’s first game at a U.S. service academy.

Penguins 3, Islanders 2, OT —

At Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby scored with 1:12 left in overtime after Derick Brassard’s first goal with Pittsburgh tied it in the third period as the Penguins halted a three-game skid.

Bruins 2, Canadiens 1, OT —

At Boston, Brad Marchand scored 2:06 into overtime to back Anton Khudobin, who had 27 saves, as Boston capped its first four-game season sweep of Montreal since 1994-95.

Lightning 7, Flyers 6, SO—

At Tampa, Fla., Steven Stamkos had two goals and three assists and added a shootout goal for Tampa Bay, which is 6-0-1 in its past seven games.

At Glendale, Ariz., Antti Raanta had 23 saves for NHL-worst Arizona, which improved to 8-2-1 in its past 11 and dealt Ottawa its sixth loss in seven games.

At Los Angeles, Jonathan Toews scored on a power play to break a tie with 1:58 left for Chicago, which halted a seven-game road slide.

At Dallas, Jamie Benn scored with 1:56 left in overtime after Alexander Radulov scored to pull Dallas even with 2:56 to go in regulation.

At Edmonton, Alberta, Mika Zibanejad scored the goahead goal and had an assist for New York, which won its third straight.
