Mariners’ Cruz to undergo MRI

-

Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz left Saturday’s game against the Indians with a twisted right ankle after slipping on the dugout steps following his home run in the sixth inning.

X-rays were negative, but Cruz will undergo an MRI on Sunday. Cruz was wearing a protective boot after the game.

“When I heard that, I wanted to throw up,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “I really don’t know any other way to put it. Our club has just battled through a bunch of nagging injuries here in spring training and early in the season here.”

Cruz’s absence was felt in the eighth after Robinson Cano led off with a bloop double but never advanced. Guillermo Heredia, pinch-hitting for Cruz, was unable to bunt Cano to third and flew out. Miller finished the inning with strikeouts of Kyle Seager and Ryon Healy.

The club also announced a swap of minor league pitchers, acquiring right-hander Casey Meisner from Oakland for reliever Josh Lucas. A two-time minor league All-Star, the 6-foot-7 Meisner is 30-34 with a 3.66 ERA over 85 minor league starts and 104 total appearances.

Meanwhile, closer Greg Holland will report to Class A Palm Beach to prepare for his St. Louis debut. The 32-year-old righty signed a one-year deal for $14 million.

Holland consented to up to 14 days in the minors. The three-time All-Star had 41 saves for Colorado last season, going 3-6 with a 3.61 ERA.

■ Cincinnati signed right-hander Yovani Gallardo to a one-year deal for $750,000 and optioned right-hander Zack Weiss to Triple-A Louisville. Gallardo was released by the Brewers on Wednesday.
