Lomachenko stops Linares in 10th to snare lightweigh­t belt

Vasiliy Lomachenko stopped Jorge Linares in the 10th round of their WBA lightweigh­t championsh­ip fight in New York, winning a title in his third weight class in his 12th pro bout.

Linares (44-4, 27 knockouts), a 32-year-old Las Vegas resident who hadn’t lost in 13 bouts since 2012, knocked down Lomachenko (11-1, nine KOs) in the sixth, and the bout was even after nine rounds before the 30-year-old twotime Olympic gold medalist took control with a 10th-round flurry.

■ Swimming: At Bloomingto­n, Ind., Kasia Wilk of Las Vegas broke the U.S. Masters record for the 25-29 age group in the women’s 100-yard freestyle, winning in 48.58 seconds, breaking the mark of 49.18 set by Olympian Kim Vandenberg, at the U.S. Masters National Championsh­ips.

■ Hockey: At Herning, Denmark, Mikko Rantanen scored twice to back Harri Sateri, who had 30 saves, as Finland stunned Canada 5-1, handing the Canadians their second loss in the IIHF world championsh­ip and denting their bid for a third title in four years.

■ Mixed martial arts: At San Jose, Calif., Ryan Bader (25-5, 11 knockouts) made a quick and impressive debut in the heavyweigh­t division, stopping Muhammed Lawall (21-7) 15 seconds into the first round of the Bellator 199 main event.

■ Tennis: At Madrid, two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic outlasted Kiki Bertens of the Netherland­s 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 to capture a record third Madrid Open title.

■ College basketball: Toronto native Marcus Carr, a point guard who averaged 10.0 points and 4.0 assists with a team-high 20 steals in 2017-18 as a freshman at Pittsburgh, transferre­d to Minnesota.
