Giants 1B Belt has emergency appendecto­my, placed on DL

San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt underwent an emergency appendecto­my and was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday.

He was resting after the procedure and expected to be released from a Bay Area hospital Saturday, the club said in announcing he underwent the procedure late Friday.

Belt, 30, had one at-bat in a 4-0 win over Philadelph­ia on Friday. He was removed in the third inning and taken to a hospital for possible appendicit­is. Manager Bruce Bochy said Belt hadn’t felt well before the game.

Second baseman/outfielder Alen Hanson (left hamstring strain) was activated from the DL to fill Belt’s roster spot.

■ Free agent Oliver Perez was signed, and fellow left-handed reliever Jeff Beliveau was designated for assignment. Perez, 36, joined his eighth major league team since debuting in 2002. He is the 15th reliever used this year by Cleveland, whose bullpen had a majors-worst 6.01 ERA entering Saturday.

■ Second baseman Dustin Pedroia (inflamed left knee) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and first baseman/outfielder Sam Travis and left-handed reliever Bobby Poyner were recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Pedroia, 34, who had knee surgery in October, made his season debut May 26 and is 1-for-11 with two walks.

■ Right fielder Kole Calhoun (right oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, right-hander Jaime Barria was optioned to Salt Lake, and second baseman/third baseman Kaleb Cowart and outfielder Michael Hermosillo were recalled from the Triple-A club.

■ First baseman/outfielder Eric Thames (torn ligament in left thumb), who had surgery April 27, is to start a rehabilita­tion assignment Monday with Milwaukee’s extended spring training team in Arizona.

■ P.J. Conlon was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets and assigned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, and fellow left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (left groin strain) was transferre­d to the 60-day disabled list.

■ Third baseman/shortstop Jung Ho Kang (restricted list) began a minor league rehabilita­tion assignment Friday with Class-A Bradenton and went 0-for-3 with two walks.

■ Left-handed reliever Jorge De La Rosa (right Achilles tendon bursitis) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and righthande­d reliever Jake Barrett was recalled from Triple-A Reno.

■ Right-hander Homer Bailey (inflamed right knee) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and right-handed reliever Austin Brice (back strain) was activated from the DL.

■ Outfielder Carlos Tocci (left hip contusion) was activated from the disabled list, and infielder Hanser Alberto was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.

■ Left-handed reliever Jose Castillo was recalled from El Paso, and right-hander Walker Lockett was optioned to the Triple-A club.

■ Catcher Yadier Molina (pelvic surgery) started a rehabilita­tion assignment Saturday with Double-A Springfiel­d. Review-Journal wire services
