Athletics add closer Familia from Mets for two prospects

-

The Oakland Athletics acquired closer Jeurys Familia from the New York Mets for minor leaguers Bobby Wahl, William Toffey and $1 million in international signing bonus pool allotment. An All-Star in 2016, Familia is 4-4 with a 2.88 ERA and 17 saves in 21 chances this season, with 43 strikeouts and 14 walks over 40 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander can become a free agent after this season.

Wahl, 26, a right-handed reliever, had a 2.27 ERA over 39 2/3 innings, with 65 strikeouts and 17 walks, this season for Triple-A Nashville. Toffey, 23, a third baseman, was batting .244 at High-A Stockton. Wahl will be assigned to the 51s.

■ Orioles: Center fielder Adam Jones and first baseman Chris Davis got stuck in an elevator at Baltimore’s Toronto hotel after the Orioles’ loss Friday. Toronto Fire Service staff eventually rescued the players and fellow passengers. Rogers Centre’s sound system played a few bars of Aerosmith’s “Love in an Elevator” before Jones batted in the fourth inning Saturday.

■ Cardinals: Right-hander Carlos Martinez (right oblique strain) was placed on the 10day disabled list, right-hander Miles Mikolas was reinstated from paternity leave, righthander Luke Weaver and righthanded reliever John Brebbia were recalled from Memphis, and right-handed reliever Matt Bowman was optioned to the Triple-A club.

■ Mets: A day after saying he might need surgery on both heels that would require an eight- to 10-month recovery, Yoenis Cespedes was out of New York’s lineup because of body soreness, and the Mets’ front office did not publicly comment on the two-time All-Star outfielder’s health revelation.

■ Rockies: Second baseman DJ LeMahieu (left oblique strain) was placed on the 10-day disabled list, and the contract of middle infielder Garrett Hampson — a Reno native — was purchased from Triple-A Albuquerque.

■ Yankees: Second baseman Gleyber Torres (right hip strain), out since July 4, began an injury rehabilitation assignment with Class-A Tampa and is to rejoin the Yankees on Wednesday.

■ Angels: Right-hander Nick Tropeano (inflamed right shoulder) was activated from the disabled list, and right-handed reliever Eduardo Paredes was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.

■ Brewers: Outfielder/first baseman Ryan Braun (back strain) was activated from the disabled list, and catcher Jacob Nottingham was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

■ Red Sox: Third baseman Rafael Devers (inflamed left shoulder) was activated from the disabled list, and left-handed reliever Bobby Poyner was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

■ Indians: Center fielder Bradley Zimmer will be out eight to 12 months after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, the team said.
